I’m often asked how and why I started running. Let me start with the why.
Why do I run? It’s free, you get to go outside, and if you’re trying to lose weight it works. Pretty simple.
Now, I was NEVER a runner before. In school when we had to run the mile for PE, I was last to finish. I used to joke that I would only run if something was chasing me. Running sucked, and I wasn’t going to do it. Not to mention I was so slow people could walk faster than I could run. There was a running joke (har har) in my family about my terrible running abilities. To say the least, it was not my thing.
Then I moved across the country. I didn’t have a job yet, and I was out of shape. This meant I had a lot of free time to work on getting in shape, but not much money. Running seemed the perfect option seeing as it was free, I would get to explore my new neighborhood, and I would get in shape. It was a daunting task, but I wanted to try.
So how did I start running? After a lot of online research I came across this e-course on About.com: 3 Weeks to a 30-Minute Running Habit by Christine Luff. It worked like a charm! This is a run/walk program that emails your workout to you every day. I loved this because I couldn’t look ahead and get overwhelmed before I even started. I just did what the email told me each day, and that was it. Sometimes you get a rest day, and I lived for those days. But as promised I was running for 30 minutes straight in 3 weeks, when I could barely run for 1 minute straight in the beginning. If you are looking for a way to get into running, this program just works!
